Women Getting Locked in Abortion Box

I have heard and seen countless issues that face women. Heck, I have had my own, so it saddens me that the only issue that women seem to dwell around is abortion, whether for it or against it. The rallying cry from both sides is loud.

The problem is that politicians know it is the only thing that gets women involved. I can't even think of when the last time I saw the same vocalization over pay disparity, spousal abuse, or real health issues like breast cancer. Nope, if you want to rally women, just mention abortion.

Let's put this in perspective:

  • 1 in 4 women will be a victim of abuse by a partner in their lifetime. On a yearly basis, that's about 1.3 million women.
  • One-third of those women will be killed by that partner, or about 16,800 per year.
  • Women earn 77.4 percent of what men earn. For African Americans and Latino women it's even worse.
  • Sexual harassment continues in spite of laws, training, etc.
  • Breast Cancer will affect 1 in 4 women. It is top killer of women, and depending on socioeconomic class it can mean the difference between life and death.
Now abortions numbers don't even account for 1 in 100 women having them, so why is it the top issue on the political agenda.?
There are far more pressing issues than abortion, so by being distracted by this one issue, women are not helping themselves. As I have said previously, it is time to change the conversation to more pressing issues women have.

Whatever you are, be a good one. - Abraham Lincoln
